SUMMARY Because of rapid development of the covered crop production observed in the Marmara Region in recent years a study was necessiated to uncover and bring into light the framework of covered vegetable crop production, to forsee the potential and possible measures to be taken for further development. The data for evaluation were gathered from producers in Balıkesir, Çanakkale, Sakarya and Yalova provinces, as well as from various statistical sources and research results. Many of the growers interviewed have already accumulated experiences in covered crop culture since they have alreaddy involved in greenhous cut flower production. In the farms examined, the size was under 40 decars in 795 of the total. Greenhouse and field-grown vegetables cover 14.1% of the total farmland. An average farmland was 36.2 decars and vegetable area was 2.2 decars. Construction was iron-plastic 78.6%, wood-plastic 11.5%, iron-glass 4.4% and tunnel 5.5%. Preferred vegetables were cucumbers, green beans, and lettuces. Employed total labour force per decar in production 407.6 hours for cucumber, 165.0 hours for beans, and 79.8 hours for lettuces. An average number of treatment was 9.6 for cucumber, 6 for beans, and 5.1 for lettuces. Net profit in cucumber, bean and lettuce production was 16.7%, 17.3% and 13.6% respectively. Major constraints of profitability are low prices and lack of associations to determine the price. 74.5% of the cucumbers were sold to wholesalers and 21.2% to local markets while 77.6 of beans were sold to wholesalers and 20% for local markets. For lettuce major selling places were wholesalers and local markets with 51.7% and 35.9% share covers. |
