A Study on Determination of Ornamental Sector's Problems in Turkey Concerning Production, and Foreign Trade

SUMMARY

 

The aim of the study is to understand the production and marketing problems, ensuring propagative materials and to improve some solutions for the ornamental sector within context as the sub-sector which covers cut flowers, pot-plants, outdoor ornamentals and bedding plants.

The data gathered from 221 producers located in Yalova, İzmir, Bursa, Sakarya, Antalya, Mersin and some Black Sea Region provinces by questionnaires in 2002. Evaluations were based on, the enterprises involved as 42,5% was outdoor ornamentals, 34,4% cut flowers, 14,5% bedding plants, and 8,6% was pot plants. Also examined oon the study overall production and foreign trade of ornamental sector in Turkey with secondary source informations.

74,6% of the farmland is reserved for ornamental production in the enterprises. The average labour force was 125 days/year Per decar. 67,8% of labour force was coming from outside. The smallest enterprises were pot-plant producers.

Only the cut flower producers in Antalya were exporting their production (60% of total production being exported to England, Russia, and Ukraine). Other enterprises marketed their products in domestic markets. Landscaping plants are grown in rented and open areas. The biggest share of total ornamental imports belongs to outdoor ornamentals.
