Study on Economic Evaluation of Cabbage Production in Turkey |

SUMMARY The study has been comprised findings gathered from cabbages producing farms and findings related cabbages in Turkey and the world in general. In 10 major cabbages producing provinces, 89 growers were interviewed and some findings about socio-economics structures of farms, cabbages production techniques applied by farms, marketing systems and production and marketing problems. Cabbages have been had fairly production of the world. China is the first cabbages producer of the world with 24 %. Cabbages production of Turkey is 1.7 % of the world. Cabbages production in leafy vegetables production is 48.2 % in Turkey. Between 1990 and 1994 years cabbages export is changing to 0.5 % from 0.02 % of production. The form of direct sale to consumers is used in 45.3 % of farms. As an average of farmers age is 44.3, education is 5.9 years, family has 5 people and experiment of cabbages production is 11.4 years. Farm size is between 4 to 1500 decar. Average farm size is 66.6 decar and cabbages production land is 11.6 decar in it. 73.4 % is own land, 24.2 % is rented and 2.4 % is operated with sharecropping system of farmland. Average number of parcel is 4.7. 38.3 % of farmland is allocated to vegetables production and in 50.6 % of its it produced cabbages. As an average of studied farms, 101.3 hours of labour force and 2.26 hours of tractor power are used for per decar cabbages production in a production period. 44.4 % of total labour is used for harvesting. 62.5 % of total labour is men workers. Producers is fairly using seeds that their own produce (58.9 %). Ammonium nitrate is commonly used. Averagely 21.56 kg N, 17.08 kg P2O5 and 2.56 kg K2O are used for one decar. Average yield is 4679 kg/da on white cabbages and 3425 kg/da on red cabbages. The percentage of profit is 36.4 % on white cabbages and 0.9 % on red cabbages. But it changes in different areas, because of the prices of labour and tractor, yields and prices of crop. 38.2 % of production cost is inputs. According to the growers, difficulties in marketing are major constraint of cabbages production. 75.1 % on white cabbages and 82.4 % on red cabbages of production is marketed. Cash sale is 77.7 %. In marketing of cabbages is less used packing. |
