SUMMARY

Walnut trees grouped in nuts are actually reproduced as clonal which is vegetative material. Generally, seedlings are firstly obtained by walnut seed that is planted in the nursery. Then cultivars are grafted onto seedling rootstocks, and walnut orchards are established by this grafted young trees. As known, clonal samplings are preferred at modern orchards by orcharder. Because walnuts trees grafted on rooted cuttings have performed well as clonal when compared to seedlings. However, sampling production grafted on clonal walnut rootstock is not still be used in walnut orchards extensively. Because of this, seedling is largely be used recently. In addition to this, walnut growers have not knowledge enough about walnut varieties and tips which are be evaluated as seedling rootstock. In spite of this, the lose of a plenty of walnut seeds are be occurred in each year.

Characteristics of seeds taken from walnut cultivars and tips must be investigated well such as germination, growth, and development of seeds is effectively determined and the best ones of that must be selected. As a result of these, this study was prepared and resulted at at Atatürk Central Horticultural Research Institute. In this research, the best cultivars and tips of walnuts shown the highest characteristics were selected in order to recommend as walnut seedling rootstock for walnut growers. The highest characteristics of walnut seedling rootstock has been observed “16SÖLEZ-1” cultivar. Then, “Bilecik”, “41GŞ03”, “41.KYD.14”, 16OG2”, “11BM.1” cultivars and tips have shown the best characteristics respectively.
