Breeding of “Amasya Okra”

SUMMARY

“Amasya okra” population has long and thin fruit it is used for drying in Amasya and Kargı. The population showed wide differences in plant height, plant shape, fruit shape, colour and hairless. A selection programme was carried out in Yalova between 1989-1995 and 5 lines were selected. These new lines were tried in Yalova as well as in Amasya conditions and their yield, quality and homogeneity were evaluated.

The line with No. 612 was selected as candidate for cultivar. The average yield is 835 kg/da in Yalova (665 kg/da in Amasya). The average plant height is 52 cm, with few side branches and the size of fruits is 1.2 X 3.5 cm and is a semi-early variety.
